Due to increasingly colder weather anticipated for Wednesday and Thursday, the Seniors have decided to postpone our movie in the gym to Wednesday the 28th at 5pm. The Senior class still looks forward to providing a fun activity for kids and families during the holiday break. Stay safe and warm! We hope to see everyone on the 28th! Merry Christmas!
Thursday 12/22 basketball games vs Plenty Coups have been postponed. We will let you know of the reschedule date when it is solidified. Sorry for the late notice and have a safe and Merry Christmas!
Dear Harlowton Community,
Last Friday, our basketball teams travelled to Park City. During the boy's Varsity game, there were incidents of racial taunting and harassment from a group of students in the Park City student section towards our team and a specific student athlete. There were also other incidents of really poor sportsmanship directed at some other players, until Mr. Olsen asked the Athletic Director to address the behavior and taunts. Obviously this was very upsetting to the players, the coaches, families and spectators in the stands.
On Saturday, I reached out to Mr. Grabowska, the Superintendent at Park City and asked for him to call me to discuss the matter after writing a letter describing what had been reported by our students, coaches and Mr. Olsen. We had a very productive phone call and assurances that the matter would be dealt with on Monday morning.
Mr. Grabowska did exactly that, working with his leadership team, investigating the incidents, and making an action plan to address the situation all around. Yesterday, I received an email from Dan and I wanted to share it with you all. As unfortunate as this experience was for everyone involved, I wanted to thank Park City schools for taking the situation seriously and leading the way to address not just the situation itself but the underlying roots of the problem. I am encouraged that this will not happen again, especially at Park City. I only hope that all schools look to this situation, learn from it, and use it as a teaching moment for our students and spectators.
Sincerely,
Mrs. B
Here is the letter in full from Mr. Grabowska. To write a letter like this takes courage.
December 19, 2022
Christina,
As the Superintendent/HS Principal at Park City Schools, I was extremely upset to learn of the actions of some of our student body at our basketball game on December 16. I find their reported actions to be abhorrent and completely out of line with our school’s belief system. Please know these are not actions that we take lightly.
Our student body has the responsibility to accept, include, and treat with respect and sportsmanship all visitors to our gym and playing fields. As with most schools, it is something we constantly reinforce with our student body and fans. When visiting our school each person has the right to a safe environment so that they can contribute to their team without concern for how they might be treated because of race, skin color, or any other difference. On Friday that didn’t happen, and I am deeply embarrassed by it.
We have been developing an action plan to deal with this situation. Punishments have been handed out. We will be refocusing our students on sportsmanship, especially from the stands. We will make our east basket safer by not allowing students to sit in the front row. We will have our student council working on any other student body ideas. And we will continue to strive to be a more inclusive school.
It may be a hard ask, but I hope you can consider our school to be that safe place in the future, and not let the actions of a few taint the true sportsmanship of our school. I sincerely hope that you are provided that safe environment for the rest of your season. I wish I didn’t even have to make that statement but as we just witnessed, ignorance does seem to rear its ugly head.
Sincerely Apologetic,
Dan
Good Chilly Morning!
Thankfully today is our last day of school before winter break and that the dangerous cold and arctic blast that is creeping in will occur tomorrow and Thursday. With that being said, I wanted to remind everyone that we get out or school today at 2:35pm and buses will run at that time. Also, the games against Bridger have been postponed to 2/2/23. At this time, games against Plenty Coup on Thursday night are still on the schedule but that may change.
Please stay warm and safe and have a very Merry Christmas, Holiday Season, New Year, and enjoy this time with your families and friends. We come back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Go Engineers!
Mrs. B
The basketball games vs Bridger on 12/20 have been rescheduled for 2/2. Thursday 12/22 vs Plenty Coups is still scheduled to go on as planned. If any additional changes occur, we will let you know ASAP. Go Engineers🚂🚂🚂
